Lynne Aspnes is Professor Emerita of Harp from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she taught from 1985 until 2008. Along with her teaching career, Aspnes served the School of Music in administrative positions as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Chair of the String Department, and Director of the Center for Career Development. From 2008 until 2013 Aspnes served Arizona State University as Associate Dean for the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, and Professor of Harp. Her performing and teaching career has taken her around the globe from Australia to Europe, South American, Southeast Asia, and across the North American continent. With some good internet search skills you can find recordings of her playing on the Collins Classics, Clarion, CRI, ProArte, ProOrgano, RCA Red Seal, SoundSet and Virgin Classics labels.
Along with her lifelong interest in and dedication to teaching, Aspnes is a tireless advocate for creating opportunities for aspiring musicians. She is always delighted to see how commitment, ambition, effort, and aspiration realize themselves in the accomplishments and creativity of many former students. She is happy to talk about those accomplishments any time!
As a longtime member of the American Harp Society Aspnes was able, at a young and formative age, to meet, listen to, engage with, and learn from harpists across the U.S. and abroad. It was through her experiences with the AHS that she was able to make connections to and build friendships with harpists around the globe. She has volunteered her service to the AHS for decades in multiple capacities. She is proud of the role she has played in helping the AHS develop programs that engage young harpists in pursuing their interests and skills as performers, public servants, composers, writers, researchers, and lifelong lovers of the harp.
